Multifocal Lenses

Technology That Does Not Need Glasses For Near And Far Distance After The Age Of 40

With the smart lens, the treatment of refractive error such as cataracts and far and near distance vision can be resolved by placing them into the eye with the laser or the Fako technique, which is known as a unsewn operation technique in colloquially. "Trifocal Lenses", known as smart lenses applied in Liv Hospital Ulus Eye Health Clinic, are placed in the eye to ensure far, medium and near distance can be clearly seen.

Better results with multifocal lenses

The most common solution for getting rid of glasses is excimer laser treatment. Although laser treatment can be done to people between the ages of 18-60, it is not preferred after 40. The reason for this is that after the age of 40 as additional presbyopia (farsightedness) occurs. Presbyopia is a physiological disease and occurs in every person. Natural lens loses its yawning feature as the people grew older and cannot focus when the people looking close. Intraocular lenses, known as smart lenses, provide solutions for patients with distant and near problems after the age of 40. These lenses are generally called multifocal lenses and better results can be obtained with trifocal lenses produced in recent years.

It is most often used in cataracts

After 40 years of age, structural and functional changes occur as a result of the loss of flexing ability in our intraocular lens. When people looks closer, the lenses cannot change their shape and become unable to focus in close reading. Over time, with the formation of cataracts, loss of distant vision is also experienced. With cataract surgeries, intraocular lens is placed by changing the natural lens. However, thanks to the possibilities of today's technology, smart lenses offer presbyopia (near vision) treatment as well as treatment of refractive error such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.

It saves from both cataracts and refractive error

The only treatment for cataract disease is surgery, and intraocular lenses are definitely used in this surgery. In the past, only monofocal lenses were used. Patients used remote and / or close glasses after surgery. With trifocal lenses, the need for glasses has completely disappeared, the patient has got rid of cataract disease, as well as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia (if any).

How it is made?

Trifocal* AddOn® lens is placed in front of the primary intraocular lens that is implanted during your cataract surgery previously. Lenses create a double lens system together. It can be performed months, even years after your primary lens implantation. The procedure can be done in a very short and simple way.

Suitable for whom?

It is most often used for cataract patients. The eyepiece begins to show signs of aging from the age of 40. At this age, the lens is transparent but loses some of the power of adaptability (focalization to near).  Towards the end of the 40's age, if the patient have hyperopia of +3.00 and above, close vision is further deteriorated and it may be considered to replace the lens with multifocal lenses. After the age of 50, aging increases in the lens and light transmittance decreases. Multifocal lenses are also suitable for these eyes.  For both Trifocal and AddON lenses, patients' corneal and retinal layers must be suitable. Lenses with this feature cannot be applied to every patient. For example, these lenses are not preferred in patients with yellow spot disease (Age-Related Macular Disease) or in patients with corneal disease. The patient with monofocal vision before the operation is made trifocal with AddON lens application.

Can this procedure be performed on patients who have had cataract operations and currently use glasses?

With the smart lens, the treatment of refractive error and cataracts can be resolved by placing them into the eye with the laser or the Fako technique, which is known as a unsewn operation technique in colloquially. In addition, patients who have had cataract surgery with monofocal lenses in the past, but who have problems with near vision, and those who are not suitable for excimer laser or who have possible retinal problems, can be provided with glasses without vision, brought by far, near and medium distance trifocal lenses with AddOn® lens. In the past, it was impossible to replace and transform the monofocal lens. However, it is now possible to place a secondary lens on the monofocal lens with AddON lenses to ensure that the patient does not wear glasses and sees both far and near.
