(PEG) Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy

Feeding tube insertion into the stomach is called PEG. The procedure is performed during endoscopy and takes about 20 minutes. As a general rule, PEG insertion is indicated in patients who cannot be fed for more than 3 weeks. The inserted tube is not used for up to 12 hours. However, nutritional formulas and nutrients can then be easily delivered via tube. The tube should usually be replaced once a year.

Who are eligible for PEG?

Those with oncological disorders

•    For tumors in ear, nose and throat
•    Tumors in upper gastrointestinal system
•    For palliative purpose for inoperable patients
 

Those with neurological disorders

•    Cerebrovascular stroke
•    Intracranial tumors
•    Bulbar paralysis
•    Parkinson’s disease
•    Cerebral palsy
•    Patients with end-stage Alzheimer's disease who cannot swallow food

It is a procedure that makes life much easier for both the patient and the caregivers. Patients should not drive since the preoperative effect of sedation will last for 3 to 4 hours. For this reason, patients are strongly recommended to come with someone who will take them back to their homes.
