Eating Disorders

A group of diseases associated with excessive weight loss or gain are collectively known as eating disorders. Eating disorders are a serious psychiatric disorder in which interventions should be evidence-based. Cognitive therapies and therapies focusing on interpersonal relationships are well established for bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorders.

Multidisciplinary Approach

Treatment of eating disorders can be considered under a few categories. When considering the treatment of anorexia, bulimia nervosa and obesity, the sub-categories may vary. Inpatient treatment, pharmacological treatment, psychotherapy and surgical and medical obesity treatments are included in these sub-categories. Treatment approach should be multi-disciplinary. If necessary, an internal medicine specialist or dietician should be included in the treatment plans. The heterogeneity of the diseases should be considered and treatment should be planned by taking care of the personality organization, conflicts, family and social environment, genetic and biological characteristics of the patients.
