What is balloon method? Balloon method is a useful procedure in COPD patients with chronic bronchitis component. The obstructed bronchi are opened with a balloon that rhythmically swells and descends by means of a pump. This balloon destroys damaged cells that sectarianises mucus or phlegm, allowing both the opening of the bronchus and also the development of new and uniform cells. The mucus that develops during the destruction of the cells is cleared during bronchoscopy. Each lung lobe and segment is mechanically cleaned with the balloon. Thus, a significant increase in the diameter of the bronchi is provided, preventing the patient to produce phlegm. Shortness of breath is also treated with the opening of the bronchi.
