Robotic Surgery in Kidney Cancer

Kidney Cancer

Renal cancers originating from the kidneys of the kidneys constitute 2-3% of all body cancers. Renal cancers, a type of urological cancer that can be life-threatening, are seen in 2 women against 3 men. The disease affects mostly 60-70 years old, but it can be seen in young people. It is also known that there is a 2-3% rate of family crossing in researches.

Risk Factors

Smoking is the most important risk factor for kidney cancer. It is known that 20-30% of the infected people are exposed to any of the tobacco products. In addition, the other two important factors identified in excess weight and high blood pressure. Since the kidneys are located in the posterior abdominal region, many kidney tumors can grow without symptoms. 50 percent of kidney cancers are diagnosed and diagnosed during another examination. Disease itself after the growth of the tumor in the urine bleeding, pain or spread to other organs can show. In addition, it can give symptoms such as weight loss, fever, nausea and weakness.
Surgical intervention with early diagnosis in kidney cancer is very important because it provides complete healing. Sometimes a simple urinalysis can be diagnosed by an ultrasound, a computed tomography (CT) or a magnetic resonance (MR) image.

Types of Kidney Cancer

Each of the kidneys has a unit that can produce more than one million urine. Each of these units is called a "nephron". Each nephron is associated with a microscopic renal tubule. Each tubule is also associated with tubules from other nephrons. The tubules carry the urine through the collecting channels to the pelvis, the central part of the kidney. If kidney cancer develops from these tubules, these tumors are called "cortical tumors." Renal pelvis is called "urinary tract epithelial cell cancer" (urothelial cancer, transitional cell cancer).

All the masses in the kidney are not cancer. There are renal cysts which can be diagnosed mostly by imaging techniques and non-malignant tumors called angiomyolipoma. Other organ cancers (such as breast, lung, skin) can also be metastasized to the kidneys. Again, lymphoma in the kidney is also a type of cancer. In these cases, the method followed in the treatment of the original cancers and similar treatment methods are used.

Kidney Cancer Symptoms

Kidney cancer usually grows insidiously. Tumor growth symptoms can be listed as follows:
  • Bleeding in urine
  • Backache
  • Spread to other organs
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • No fever or flu-free fever
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Edema in the legs due to insufficient fluid in the body
  • Weakness

Treatment

In renal tumors, the main treatment of which is surgery, the aim is to remove all or part of the kidney. In the current approach, only the tumor portion of the kidney is removed in small tumors; Intact kidney tissue is preserved. With the introduction of robotic technology in the last 10 years, these operations can be performed with similar advantages to the open surgery by using all the advantages of minimally invasive surgery. Instead of large surgical incision, robotic partial nephrectomy is performed by opening 8 and 10 millimeter small holes in the abdomen. The duration of hospital stay is shorter than in open surgery. Blood loss is less. Removal of the tumor and repair of the remaining kidney tissue can be done effectively and precisely under a very good image.
