In October, Breast Cancer Awareness and Awareness Month, the “Everything Starts with Being Aware” event was held in collaboration with Liv Hospital, Siveno and Meva to raise public awareness. The event, which drew attention to the importance of early diagnosis in breast cancer, focused on the importance of annual health checks.
In addition to drawing attention to breast cancer, the “Everything Starts with Being Aware” event held at Liv Hospital also discussed what can be done to adapt and gain resilience for the future. The opening speech was given by Liv Hospital Group Coordinator Meri İstiroti, and Breast Surgery Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Tükenmez, General Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Levhi Akın, and Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. Duygu Derin touched on the importance of early diagnosis.
“Regular Checkups Are a Must”
Breast Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Mustafa Tükenmez said, “As with every type of cancer, early diagnosis is of great importance in breast cancer. Early diagnosis is life-saving and can eliminate the need for additional treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy without organ loss. Therefore, women should perform monthly self-examinations and not neglect medical examinations and mammographic screenings. Approximately 20 thousand women were diagnosed with breast cancer in Turkey last year alone. One in every 8-10 women encounters these cancers throughout their lives. In addition to genetic and environmental factors, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, stress, and unhealthy nutrition are among the factors that invite breast cancer. We can reduce the risk of breast cancer by doing regular exercise, maintaining an ideal weight, eating healthily, and staying away from stress,” she said.
Exercising Reduces Breast Cancer Risk
Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. Duygu Derin said, “Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer seen in women in the world today. Breast cancer is found in one in every 6 to 8 women. Early screening for such a common cancer can reduce mortality by 35%. Therefore, screenings that start at the age of 40 with mammography and breast ultrasound are very important. Regular physical exercise, at least 150 minutes of sports per week, reduces the risk of breast cancer. Similarly, the Mediterranean diet, staying away from alcohol and smoking, and a regular life also reduce the risk of breast cancer,” he said.
“The Recovery Rate with Early Diagnosis is Over 95 Percent”
General Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Levhi Akın; “According to the statistical data of the Turkish Ministry of Health, it ranks first among all cancers seen in women with a rate of 24 percent. The rate of breast cancer in the female population in Turkey is approximately 10 percent. While only 48 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer in our country have early-stage cancer, 42 percent have regional spread and 10 percent have distant spread. Breast cancer, which has a recovery rate of over 95 percent when diagnosed at an early stage, can be diagnosed at a later stage in more than half of the women in our country, and the chance of a near-complete recovery is at risk. Although breast cancer is almost always related to a genetic abnormality, only 5-10 percent of it is related to a hereditary abnormality. "Although the measures taken to protect the body do not completely eliminate the risk, they will reduce the risk and provide the chance to catch cancer at an early stage if it develops," he said.
