Blood in Urine (Hematuria)

It is the presence of red blood cells in the urine.

Hematuria is divided into two:

  1. Visible hematuria: The presence of blood in urine can be easily understood from the color of the urine.
  2. Microscopic hematuria: Blood in urine is invisible to the naked eye but blood cells are observed in urinalysis.  Urine color may be dark in these patients.
Hematuria may have recurrent properties. There may also be periods when these patients have normal urine. Hematuria is a sign of serious illness.

Diseases Causing Hematuria

  • Urinary tract infection
  • Renal inflammations called nephritis
  • Urinary tract and kidney cancers
  • Stone disease
  • Kidney tuberculosis
  • Urinary bladder diseases
  • Renal cysts

In addition, in the case of prostate and uterine diseases, there may be blood in urine although there is no problem in urinary tract.

The common point in most of the diseases which cause hematuria is that they can be treated with early diagnosis. Therefore, patients with blood in urine should be evaluated by nephrologists or urologists.
