Diabetes-induced Kidney Disease

One of the most affected organs in the case of diabetes is kidneys. Life expectancy of diabetic patients has increased as a result of the improvements in treatment so today, diabetes-induced kidney problems are more common. In Turkey, the most common cause of kidney failure in patients receiving dialysis treatment is diabetes. Kidney problems in diabetics are called diabetic nephropathy.

  • Diabetic nephropathy consists of 5 stages:
  • Growth and extreme function
  • Silent stage
  • Hidden diabetic nephropathy
  • Prominent diabetic nephropathy
  • End-stage renal failure

Treatment

Treatment differs according to the stage of the disease. High blood pressure should be treated and blood glucose should be controlled. With proper treatment, progression of diabetic nephropathy can be prevented. Treatments such as dialysis and kidney transplant are planned if filtering functions of the kidney are reduced significantly.
