Fetal Treatment

Problems experienced during pregnancy may put the baby's life at risk in the womb and may cause permanent disability or infant death due to insufficient development after birth. Thanks to new methods and developing technology, it is possible for the experts to treat fetus in Liv Hospital Perinatology Clinic.

Intervention to renal dysfunction in the womb

If the fetus diagnosed with urinary obstruction and especially low amniotic fluid, serious problems may occur in postnatal lung development. In this case, the baby's chances of survival can be severely reduced. Therefore the renal functions of the baby are examined by ultrasonography and bladder sampling. In cases where renal function is normal, a shunt is placed between the bladder and amniotic fluid. Thus, the blockage can be cleared and the amount of amniotic fluid can return to normal.

Fluid accumulation in the lung causes serious problems

Other conditions in which a shunt is placed in the womb are pleural effusion (fluid accumulation in the pleura) and intense fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity (fetal acid). Intense fluid accumulation can seriously damage baby’s health. When this is diagnosed, the accumulated fluid is drained with a catheter. In this way, the pressure on the baby can be removed and in some cases this problem can be treated. Some congenital lung malformations of the fetus, diaphragmatic hernia (diaphragmatic hernia), anemia or blood platelet deficiency can be successfully treated with fetal drugs and blood disease treatment.

Anomalies of twin babies can be brought under control

The most important anomaly monitored in twins in womb is the twin-twin transfusion syndrome and the anomaly in one baby. As a result of blood circulation sharing in twin pregnancies one fetus pumps excess blood into the other fetus. One fetus suffers from heart failure because of the blood field inflation while the other fetus remains weaker. Due to the severity of this disease serious risks may arise in the womb. If these problems are not intervened, pregnancy may end with fetal loss.

Successful results can be accomplished by burning of common blood vessels between twins by ultrasonography and fetoscopy or coagulation of umbilical cord with bipolar forceps.
