Pediatric Brain and Nerve Surgery is a branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and surgical interventions of brain and nervous system issues observed in children.

This field covers a wide range of issues, including congenital neurological disorders, tumors, traumas, epilepsy, hydrocephalus and other nervous system conditions.

What is Pediatric Neurosurgery?

Providing continuous service to pediatric patients, the clinic works in cooperation with other clinics. It provides effective solutions to all kinds of simple or complex diseases in a short time period with its experienced team, special pediatrics service, neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, and high end operation rooms.

Which Diseases Does the Pediatric Neurosurgery Clinic Treat?

Liv Hospital Pediatric Neurosurgery (Pediatric Brain and Nerve Surgery) Clinic is a specialized branch that deals with brain, nerve and spinal cord diseases that require surgical intervention during childhood. Liv Hospital Pediatric Neurosurgery Clinic has been reorganized with a different approach within the Department of Brain and Nerve Surgery. Pediatric Neurosurgery Clinic's fields of specialty and the diseases it frequently engages with are as follows:

Congenital anomalies of the nervous system Hydrocephalus - accumulation of water as a result of impaired water circulation in the brain Tumors of the brain and spine Spina bifida - spine and spinal cord closure defects Childhood brain and spinal cord vascular diseases - aneurysm, arteriovenous malformations and moyamoya disease Deformities of the skull-craniosynostosis Epilepsy Movement disorders during childhood, dystonia and spasticity Neonatal congenital brain hemorrhages Head traumas and spinal traumas Deformities of the spine

Specialties of the Pediatric Neurosurgery

Team Liv Hospital is engaged in clinical, academic and scientific work with the staff of the relevant Department of İstinye University Faculty of Medicine, where it has a Brain and Nerve Surgery Clinic. Along with the latest technological equipment and in cooperation with all units within the hospital, many patients who are not able to undergo surgery in many centers domestically and abroad or who are turned away because they are deemed too risky, are successfully operated on.

Live Surgical Courses

Many neurosurgeons attend live surgery courses organized every year under the guidance of the department or participate via webcast on the internet. The studies in these surgical courses are later published in reputable journals in the international neurosurgery literature; they are shown as examples in congresses and symposiums.

Surgeons Specialized in Their Fields

The Pediatric Neurosurgery team specialized at the Liv Hospital Brain and Nerve Surgery Clinic strives to find the right surgical solutions for all neurosurgical issues of the pediatric patients. Surgeons and physicians from other departments, each specialized in their field, reorganized the Pediatric Neurosurgery unit with a different approach and completely redesigned the system.

The aim of the Pediatric Neurosurgery team is to ensure that no baby or child is born sick or gets sick. The aim of the clinic is to provide the best health care to every child who contracts a disease.

Multidisciplinary Approach

At the Liv Hospital Pediatric Neurosurgery (Pediatric Brain and Nerve Surgery) Clinic, all surgical problems regarding the brain and nerve surgery of all children, from babies in the womb until 18 years of age, are examined as a team.

Due to its structure, our department works in close cooperation with Pediatrics, Neonatal (Perinatology) Unit, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric Neurology, Pediatric Oncology, Pediatric Psychiatry, Pediatric Urology, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department, Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Department, Anesthesiology and Reanimation Department, Orthopedics and Traumatology Department, Neuroradiology Department and other related branches. Patients are quickly examined and treated on common platforms with up-to-date and proven scientific methods.

Technical Infrastructure

Liv Hospital Pediatric Neurosurgery Clinic provides inpatient treatment of pediatric patients at the pediatric diseases service and pediatric/neonatal services. At this unit, service is provided with the most modern and technological infrastructure suitable for pediatric patients.

Special Operating Microscope

The operation room, which is the main base of Pediatric Neurosurgery, has a special structure that is only used for brain and spinal cord operations. All operations are performed under a special operating microscope (Zeiss Pentero 900) used only in a few centers in the world. This microscope not only magnifies and illuminates the operated area, but also allows more detailed operations to be performed by staining the tumors and vessels with its special filters. Within this scope, after the administration of sodium fluorescein during tumor surgery, the special Yellow 560 filter allows the tumor to be distinguished more easily from the regular brain and spinal cord tissues.

Fluorescence-Guided Tumor Surgery

Liv Hospital is among the first practitioners in the world of this method, also known as "fluorescence-guided tumor surgery". The special microscope system also has an IR800 camera, which makes the vessels instantly apparent by performing angiography with ICG substance during the operation. The ZeissKinevo 900 microscope, the latest wonder of the microscope system, was sent to our clinic by the Zeiss company along with the several of the world's most famous clinics for preliminary use before it was put on the market. The system can make 2D-3D recordings.

Neuromonitoring Methods

Navigation system (Medtronic Stealthstation) and special neuroultrasound (Hitachi Aloka Alpha) systems that significantly increase accuracy in brain surgeries are used in almost every operation. Computed tomography (CT) and/or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be performed during operation in any case when necessary. During the operation, brain and spinal cord functions can be monitored continuously using neuromonitoring methods. The most modern endoscope systems, ultrasonic aspirators that are useful during tumor surgeries, and all kinds of surgical/microsurgery sets are used. It has above standard conditions with its operation room equipment and infrastructure.

Experienced Anesthesia Team

Intensive care infrastructure and equipment are specifically designed for pediatric patients. Anesthesia applications that enable operations to be performed safely and effectively are applied by an experienced team using the latest system devices and materials.
